Kwara Police Launch National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery on Youth Day
Ilorin, August 22, 2026— The Kwara State Police Command on Friday joined young Nigerians and key stakeholders to commemorate International Youth Day 2026 by officially launching the National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery at the Police Officers’ Mess, GRA, Ilorin.
The event, an initiative of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, was held under the United Nations theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
It forms part of a nationwide police effort to strengthen engagement with young people, promote responsible citizenship, and prevent their exploitation for political violence, digital abuse, and other emerging crimes.
Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi welcomed participants and reminded young people that they possess the strength, knowledge, and influence to shape their communities.
He urged them not to surrender that potential to those seeking to manipulate them for violence or criminal activities.
Adekimi encouraged youths to use their voices and digital platforms positively and to view the police as partners in building safer communities.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Friday Idachaba delivered a keynote lecture titled “My Future is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”
He challenged young people to look beyond immediate inducements and recognise the lasting consequences of their choices.
The campaign was formally launched by Alhaji Usman Atolagbe Jos, Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, representing the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.
The gathering included the Command Management Team, traditional and community leaders, members of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Community Policing stakeholders, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NANS, private-sector representatives, and various youth groups.
A major highlight was the Police–Youth Dialogue, which gave young people the opportunity to engage directly with police officers on emerging security concerns, responsible use of social media, and their role in community safety.
The Command stressed that lasting security cannot be achieved through enforcement alone, but through prevention, dialogue, trust, and sustained partnership with the people—especially the younger generation.
The campaign leaves every young Nigerian with a clear message: “My Future is Greater Than Political & Digital Thuggery — Think. Engage. Build. Don’t Be Used.”
The event in Kwara forms part of broader activities across the country, including walkathons, tree-planting exercises, and similar dialogues in other states, as the Nigeria Police Force seeks to position youths as partners rather than tools of violence ahead of future political activities.
