Abuja, Nigeria – June 13, 2026 — Former Imo State Governor Chief Achike Udenwa has filed a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, accusing him of making false and damaging allegations of extortion during a recent television interview.

In a formal demand letter dated June 11, 2026, issued through his counsel Chief Soronnadi A. Njoku, SAN & Co., Udenwa described Okonkwo’s remarks as “false, malicious, and capable of causing serious reputational damage.”

The former governor, who also served as a federal minister, demanded an immediate retraction, a public apology of equal prominence, and a written undertaking to desist from further defamatory statements.

The Triggering Remarks

The controversy stems from Okonkwo’s appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on June 8, 2026. During the interview, Okonkwo allegedly accused leaders of the South-East caucus of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)—including Udenwa, Peter Obi, and former Abia Governor Okey Udeh Ugochukwu—of extorting political aspirants. He claimed the group demanded payments (such as ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants) in connection with party activities.

Udenwa’s legal team argued that these statements amount to accusing him of a criminal act of extortion, severely harming his public image as a two-term governor and elder statesman.

Context Amid Opposition Rifts

This latest suit comes amid deepening divisions in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. Okonkwo, once a close ally of Peter Obi, has since aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Atiku Abubakar.

Similar legal threats have emerged from Obi’s camp over comparable allegations made by Okonkwo.

As of the time of this report, Kenneth Okonkwo has not issued a detailed public response to Udenwa’s specific claims, though he has previously defended his statements and shared what he described as supporting evidence in related disputes.

Implications

The high-stakes legal action underscores the intensifying personal and political tensions within opposition circles.

Defamation suits of this magnitude highlight how public figures are increasingly turning to the courts to protect their reputations amid heated pre-election rhetoric.

Legal experts note that such cases often test the balance between freedom of speech and protection against malicious falsehoods in Nigeria’s political discourse.

Udenwa has maintained that the allegations are baseless and aimed at tarnishing his legacy.

The matter is expected to escalate to court if the demanded remedies are not met within the stipulated timeframe.
