New York/Abuja, June 13, 2026 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Nigerian development expert Ahunna Eziakonwa as his new Special Adviser on Africa, marking another significant boost to Nigeria’s profile in global governance.

The announcement, made on Friday, positions Eziakonwa to succeed Cristina Duarte of Cabo Verde. She assumes the role with nearly three decades of high-level UN experience, bringing deep expertise in African development, humanitarian affairs, and political engagement.

Extensive Track Record

Eziakonwa currently serves as UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In this capacity, she oversees UNDP’s support to 46 African countries in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Since 2018, she has shaped strategic approaches to economic and political development across the continent.

Her UN career includes serving as UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho. She previously led the Africa Section at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York and held senior roles in Liberia and Sierra Leone during pivotal periods. At UN headquarters, she contributed to peacekeeping, political analysis, and strategic communications.

Before joining the UN, Eziakonwa worked with several African civil society organisations. She holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, focusing on African economic and political development, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Benin, Nigeria. She speaks Igbo, English, Yoruba, and has working knowledge of French.

Significance and Reactions

The appointment underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in international diplomacy and development. It comes at a critical time as Africa grapples with economic recovery, climate challenges, governance issues, and the pursuit of sustainable development goals.

Public reactions on social media, particularly from Nigerians, have been celebratory, viewing the move as recognition of homegrown expertise and a source of national pride.

Eziakonwa’s proven leadership in coordinating complex humanitarian, development, and political initiatives positions her strongly to advise the Secretary-General on advancing Africa’s priorities within the UN system.
