Lafia, Nigeriaβ€”October 27, 2026β€”The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over a fresh resurgence of kidnapping incidents across the state, calling for urgent government intervention to protect lives and restore safety.

The concern was raised on Monday during plenary when Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, representing Lafia Central constituency, moved a motion under Matters of Public Interest.

Recent Incidents Spark Fear

Akwashiki informed the House that frequent abductions were being reported in parts of Lafia, the state capital, creating widespread fear and economic setbacks.

He cited specific cases, including the kidnapping of two people in Agyaragu, Lafia, the previous day, and earlier abductions in Agunji, Lafia.

β€œAs I am talking, the two people kidnapped yesterday are still in the hands of the kidnappers, and they are demanding ransom,” he said. Akwashiki added that his constituents could no longer sleep with their eyes closed due to the frequent attacks.

Several lawmakers, including Hon. Esson Mairiga, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala and Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, supported the motion.

They appreciated Governor Abdullahi Sule’s previous efforts on security but urged him and the security agencies to do more.

House Resolutions

Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, appreciated the mover of the motion and the contributions of members.

The House resolved to urge Governor Abdullahi Sule to direct the Commissioner of Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to intensify operations across the state.

The Speaker also called on traditional rulers, chiefs, and village heads to work with vigilante groups to identify and report strange persons in their communities.

He directed the Clerk of the House to formally communicate the resolutions to the Governor for necessary action.

Lawmakers further appealed to both the federal and state governments to procure sophisticated weapons and technology to effectively combat the rising insecurity.

The development comes amid ongoing concerns about kidnapping in Nasarawa, which has affected residents, businesses, and overall public confidence in several local government areas.
