First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Hails Humanitarian Workers on World Humanitarian Day 2026
Abuja, August 19, 2026 — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday paid glowing tribute to humanitarian workers across the world as the nation joined the global community in marking the 2026 World Humanitarian Day.
In a special message released to mark the occasion, the First Lady applauded the courage, dedication and selfless service of aid workers who continue to bring hope and relief to people affected by conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies.
This year’s theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities,” she noted, serves as a powerful reminder that lasting humanitarian action depends on three critical pillars: protecting those who deliver aid, building stronger international cooperation, and equipping local communities to lead sustainable responses to crises.
“Let us continue to stand together in compassion, uphold the dignity of every human life, and support those who work tirelessly to serve the vulnerable,” Senator Tinubu said.
World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on 19 August, was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to honour the memory of aid workers killed in the line of duty, particularly the 22 humanitarian personnel who lost their lives in the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.
The day also serves as a global call to protect civilians and those who risk their lives to assist them.
In her message, the First Lady extended her goodwill to humanitarian workers and advocates worldwide, recognising their unwavering commitment even in the most dangerous and challenging environments.
Her statement comes at a time when millions of people in Nigeria and around the world continue to face the impact of conflict, climate-related disasters and displacement. In the North-East alone, official estimates indicate that several million people still require humanitarian assistance.
Senator Tinubu’s call aligns with broader efforts under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which has focused on supporting vulnerable groups, including displaced persons, through various empowerment and relief programmes.
As the world reflects on the sacrifices of humanitarian workers, the First Lady’s message underscores a simple but profound truth: true solidarity is measured not only by words of support but by concrete actions that protect aid workers and place affected communities at the centre of every response.
