Abuja, Nigeria – July 27, 2026 — Senator Adams Oshiomhole has stirred fresh debate over the roots of Peter Obi’s unexpected 2023 presidential surge, linking it directly to the severe cash shortages triggered by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira redesign under then-Governor Godwin Emefiele.

Appearing on TVC News’ Beyond the Headlines with Nifemi Oguntoye on Monday, the Edo North lawmaker and former APC national chairman delivered a pointed assessment of the events that shaped the last general election.

He argued that Emefiele’s frustration after being blocked from contesting the presidency led to policies that “choked and suffocated the system,” generating widespread public anger that ultimately benefited Obi and the Labour Party.

“Emefiele’s crazy attempt to choke and suffocate the system once he wasn’t able to contest for president, it was that anger that produced Peter Obi,” Oshiomhole said in the widely circulated clip from the interview.

Revisiting the 2022–2023 Cash Crisis

The naira redesign policy, announced in late 2022, required Nigerians to exchange old notes for redesigned ones within a tight deadline. Implementation failures led to acute cash scarcity across the country.

Long queues at banks, closed ATMs, and disrupted commerce became daily realities for millions in the months leading up to the February 2023 presidential election.

Many analysts and ordinary citizens at the time blamed the hardship on the Buhari administration and Emefiele’s leadership at the CBN.
