Abuja/Maiduguri – July 25, 2026—Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Samaila Ibrahim Kaigama, President of the Borno South Youth Alliance (also linked to the Borno State Youths Association), shortly after a hard-hitting interview on Channels Television in which he claimed to possess evidence that the Bola Tinubu administration was paying Boko Haram and bandits while suppressing media coverage of the issue.

The arrest, reported to have taken place in Abuja around July 23, has ignited sharp reactions across social media and drawn condemnation from rights organizations, with many questioning whether it was an attempt to silence a critical voice on the lingering security crisis in the North-East.

Appearing on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, the youth leader spoke passionately about security challenges in Borno, particularly the abduction of residents from Ngoshe.

He alleged that substantial funds — widely reported in circulating accounts as around ₦5 billion — were involved in efforts to secure the release of captives, claiming parts of the process pointed to government-linked payments to insurgents and possible diversion of resources.

He further asserted that media outlets were being blocked from fully reporting the matter and insisted he had evidence to back his claims.

Kaigama, dressed in traditional attire during the broadcast, framed his comments as coming from a concerned Borno indigene rather than a partisan actor.

The interview quickly spread online, accumulating significant views and shares.

According to multiple reports, DSS operatives moved in shortly after the appearance. Kaigama remains in custody, with early accounts indicating limited or no access to lawyers at the time of reporting.

Amnesty International Nigeria expressed deep concern, describing the detention as arbitrary and calling on authorities to either release him, grant full legal access, or charge him properly in court.

Activist Omoyele Sowore and other public figures have also criticized the move, labeling it heavy-handed.

Senator Ali Ndume, who was referenced in related discussions, has publicly denied acting as any form of intermediary between kidnappers and families or officials.

He stated that Kaigama contacted him about a video and ransom demand, after which he simply relayed the information to the National Security Adviser, DSS, military, and other agencies.

The DSS itself has not issued a detailed public statement explaining the grounds for the arrest at the time of this report. The Borno State Government has also rejected aspects of the broader allegations circulating online.

The episode lands against the backdrop of persistent insecurity in Borno and neighboring states, where communities continue to grapple with abductions, ransom demands, and the long-running Boko Haram/ISWAP threat.

Kaigama’s claims touch on sensitive questions about how ransom negotiations are handled and whether official channels are sometimes compromised—issues that have long fueled public frustration.
