Oviedo, Spain – July 2, 2026 – Santi Cazorla, one of football’s most technically gifted and resilient midfielders, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41, bringing an emotional close to a career defined by brilliance, perseverance, and an unwavering love for the game.

The diminutive Asturian playmaker made the announcement on social media, reflecting on a journey that took him from his boyhood club Real Oviedo to the heights of European football and back home again.

“Now that everything is ending, when the boots are being hung up, and the noise is turning into silence, everything fits together, because the ending wasn’t just anywhere — I was at home,” Cazorla said in a heartfelt video message.

A Career of Magic and Miraculous Comebacks

Cazorla’s professional journey began at Villarreal, where his vision, close control, and goal-scoring flair earned him Spain’s Footballer of the Year honors.

Spells at Recreativo and Málaga showcased his ability to dictate games, but it was at Arsenal where he became a Premier League icon.

Under Arsène Wenger, the Spaniard dazzled with 13 assists in his debut season and played a starring role in the 2014 FA Cup triumph, scoring a crucial free-kick en route to ending the club’s nine-year trophy drought. Arsenal fans voted him Player of the Season that year.

Internationally, Cazorla was integral to Spain’s golden generation, winning UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

He earned 81 caps and 15 goals for La Roja, though injuries cruelly kept him out of the 2010 World Cup-winning squad.

His career nearly ended prematurely due to a horrific Achilles tendon injury complicated by a flesh-eating bacterial infection that threatened his foot and his life.

Defying the odds, Cazorla fought back, returned to Villarreal, and later joined Qatari club Al Sadd before making a fairytale homecoming to Real Oviedo in 2023.

At nearly 40, he helped the club achieve promotion to La Liga in 2025 and played one final top-flight season before Oviedo’s relegation prompted his decision to retire.

Cazorla was more than statistics. Known for his humility, work ethic, and joy on the pitch, he earned admiration from teammates, rivals, and fans alike.

His ability to make the difficult look effortless — precise passes, thunderous free-kicks, and quick feet — earned him the nickname “the magician.”
