Enugu, Nigeria – In a case that highlights the persistent ingenuity of economic saboteurs even in everyday commerce, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a 30-year-old businessman, Onwughalu Chikodi Godwin, for allegedly masterminding the theft of vegetable oil worth N30,853,800 from Bro-kenn Agro Allied Industries Limited.

The arrest, announced by the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, underscores the agency’s ongoing vigilance against fraud that preys on legitimate businesses, erodes trust in commercial relationships, and disrupts local industries critical to Nigeria’s food security and economy.

According to the EFCC statement and details provided by the company’s counsel, Dr. Mazi Udegbulem, Godwin, described as a major customer of the oil refining and processing firm, allegedly conspired with others still at large to systematically siphon off oil between January 9, 2024, and May 26, 2025.

The modus operandi was deceptively simple yet technically clever: manipulating the company’s weighbridge system.

Vehicles entering to lift paid-for oil are inspected and weighed empty, loaded, and reweighed. The difference determines the net weight and value of the oil loaded.

Investigators allege that Godwin and his accomplices filled extra jerry cans with water to inflate the initial “empty” weight readings.

After passing the weighbridge, they would drain the water, refill the cans with stolen vegetable oil, and exit with significantly more product than paid for.

This scheme reportedly allowed them to extract approximately 960kg of oil—valued at around N2.496 million per trip—on multiple occasions.

A pivotal incident in May 2025 exposed the plot. Godwin arrived with a Sienna bus carrying 115 gallons of jerry cans, having paid only for one ton (roughly 63 gallons of 18 liters each).

Alerted company officials inspected the vehicle and discovered 40 gallons filled with water. The weight discrepancy matched exactly the amount needed to facilitate the theft, raising red flags that had been building for months.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect had gained the company’s confidence over time, exploiting that trust to perpetrate what the EFCC describes as a calculated betrayal.

The total loss to Bro-kenn Agro Allied Industries is put at N30.8 million.

This arrest comes amid the EFCC’s sustained efforts to combat various forms of economic and financial crimes across Nigeria.
