Makurdi, Nigeria—October 26, 2026—Professor Yakubu Ochefu, a leading Benue academic and President-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma, has firmly rejected his purported appointment to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Campaign Council, declaring that his name was included without his knowledge or consent.

In a personally signed statement, the Professor of Economic History and Strategic Studies at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, clarified that he is not and has never been a member of the NDC.

Clear Rejection of Unsolicited Inclusion

“My attention has been drawn to a list circulating on social media, titled ‘Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Campaign Council’, which names me as a member of its National Campaign Caucus,” Ochefu said.

“I wish to inform the public that I am not a member of the NDC and have never been. I was not consulted before my name was included, nor did I give consent.”

He confirmed that he has already written to the Chairman of the Council to formally decline the appointment and request that his name be withdrawn, with a revised list published.

Commitment to Non-Partisanship

Ochefu, who also serves as National Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Universities Alumni (ANUA), explained that both organizations he leads comprise members from across the political spectrum.

These leadership roles, he stressed, require him to remain strictly non-partisan—an obligation he intends to honor.

“I thank all who reached out for clarification, and ask that you disregard the list insofar as it concerns me,” he added.

The development comes as the NDC continues to unveil its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the National Campaign Council expected to play a key coordinating role in the party’s mobilisation efforts.

Ochefu’s public distancing has drawn attention on social media, with some questioning the accuracy of the circulating list while others praised his insistence on remaining above partisan politics.

This report is based on Professor Yakubu Ochefu’s official statement and coverage by Vanguard Newspapers on October 26, 2026.
