FG Rules Out Electricity Tariff Hike, Pledges Reliable 24/7 Power Supply Nationwide
Ibadan, NigeriaβOctober 15, 2026βThe Federal Government has firmly ruled out any plans to increase electricity tariffs across the country, assuring Nigerians that its priority remains delivering a reliable, round-the-clock power supply.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the categorical statement on Thursday while commissioning five interconnected mini-grid projects in Ibadan, Oyo State. The projects, with a combined capacity of 17.7 megawatts and backed by a 17.74-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System, are located in Bola, Jiboye, Molade-Adelubi, Ogo Oluwa, and Sooko-Elega. They will serve communities in the Akinyele, Ido, Ibadan North, Egbeda and Lagelu Local Government Areas.
βI want to say this clearly and without ambiguity: there is no plan to increase electricity tariffs. What we are planning is a power sector that works around the clock. Our commitment is 24/7 power,β Tegbe declared, urging citizens to disregard circulating misinformation about a possible hike.
Energy Corridors and Grid Strengthening
The minister explained that the administration is pursuing a targeted energy strategy focused on designated power corridorsβincluding the Lagos-Ogun, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Benin-Enugu-Port Harcourt axes.
Parallel efforts are underway to strengthen the national grid and upgrade generation and transmission infrastructure across the eastern, western, and central regions.
Tegbe described the mini-grid initiative as a key component of President Bola Tinubuβs Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said the projects will expand electricity access, reduce householdsβ and businessesβ dependence on costly generators, and create a more favorable environment for investment and job creation.
He acknowledged the support of the Rural Electrification Agency, project developer Paras Energy and Natural Resources Development Limited, the World Bank, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, the Oyo State Government, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
Assuring Consumers Amid Persistent Challenges
The ministerβs clear rejection of a tariff increase comes against the backdrop of longstanding public concerns over high electricity costs and inconsistent supply.
By placing emphasis on improved service delivery rather than higher charges, the government aims to rebuild consumer confidence while steadily expanding access through both grid and off-grid solutions.
As the projects in Oyo State take off, officials say similar interventions continue across other states, reflecting a broader push to ensure that more Nigerians enjoy stable and affordable electricity.
This report is based on statements by the Minister of Power during the groundbreaking ceremony in Ibadan on October 15, 2026, as reported by Channels Television and other national outlets.
