Nepal Death Toll Hits 270 as Glacier Collapse Floods Leave Nearly 1,500 Missing

Kathmandu / Gyirong – August 27, 2026 — Devastating flash floods triggered by a glacier collapse high in the Himalayas have left at least 270 people dead in Nepal and three more in China’s Tibet region, with nearly 1,500 people still missing as large-scale rescue operations continue on both sides of the border.

Nepal Police confirmed Thursday that 270 bodies have been recovered after torrents of water, mud and debris tore through mountain valleys on Wednesday morning.

The disaster struck around 8:40 a.m. local time when a section of a glacier collapsed at roughly 5,200 metres elevation, generating an ice-rock avalanche that slammed into the Lhende River in Tibet before surging downstream into Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

Scale of the Human Cost

Authorities report 826 people missing in Nepal, including nearly 600 foreign nationals from more than two dozen countries.

On the Tibetan side, Chinese state media said 558 people remain unaccounted for in Gyirong County, among them about 260 foreigners.

Many of those missing were tourists and pilgrims heading toward the sacred Kailash Mansarovar site in Tibet.

Among the missing reported in Nepal are significant numbers from India (around 177), the United States (63), Australia (34), the United Kingdom (33) and Canada (25), according to police and tourism officials.

Nepal’s Tourism Board later noted 644 tourists still unaccounted for, including 517 foreigners.

Nearly 100 Chinese nationals are also reported missing on the Nepali side of the border. Some progress has been made: rescuers have located about 100 Indian visitors and 25 Chinese workers.

Families have gathered at hospitals in Kathmandu, searching lists and showing photographs of loved ones last heard from before the flood.

Survivors described scenes of sudden chaos. A grade-11 student at Trishuli Secondary School in Nuwakot recalled teachers shouting for students to flee as the river rose; some crossed a fragile bridge while others scrambled up hillsides.

Rescue Efforts Under Way

More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police personnel have been mobilized. Helicopters are ferrying survivors and dropping tents, food and medical supplies to areas cut off by destroyed bridges and roads.

At least 19 bridges and roughly 40 kilometres of roadway were washed away, complicating access. The Nepalese army has already rescued more than 100 people by air.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has arrived in the affected area of Gyirong Town to oversee emergency response. President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out search effort. International assistance is arriving: India has sent emergency supplies and offered further support; the United States pledged $500,000 and a disaster adviser; South Korea is deploying a rapid-response team; the Red Cross has released emergency funding; and the European Union activated satellite mapping services.

Aid groups such as CARE Nepal are distributing shelter, hygiene, and dignity kits while prioritizing the needs of women, girls, older people, and people with disabilities.

Climate Context and Ongoing Risks

Scientists note the disaster occurred against a backdrop of rapid Himalayan glacial retreat linked to rising temperatures. Glaciers in the broader Hindu Kush Himalaya region have been losing ice at accelerated rates.

Early seismic signals were initially misread as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake but were later attributed to the landslide itself.

A barrier lake upstream in Tibet remains a concern for possible further flooding.

Officials warn the death toll is expected to climb as search teams reach more remote or heavily silted areas.

Communication remains limited in some zones, and the full extent of damage to homes, hydropower facilities and livelihoods is still being assessed.

For now, the focus remains on locating the missing, supporting survivors and preventing secondary disasters in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable mountain regions. Families continue their anxious wait for news of those still unaccounted for.
