FG Awards Contracts to Rehabilitate 13 Police Training Institutions Nationwide in Three Weeks
Abuja, August 27, 2026 — The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rapid rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across Nigeria, with work scheduled to be completed in just three weeks to ready the facilities for Nigeria Police Force training programmes.
The update was presented on Thursday at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja.
Boost for Police Capacity
The short-timeline intervention aims to upgrade key training centres so they can better support ongoing and future police training needs.
It builds on earlier NEC decisions that approved substantial funding—including a previous N100 billion allocation subject to presidential ratification—for the overhaul of security agencies’ training facilities nationwide after an ad-hoc committee, chaired by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, highlighted their poor condition.
Officials described the move as a practical step toward strengthening the operational readiness of the police force amid persistent security challenges.
New Social Protection Framework Endorsed
At the same meeting, NEC endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026–2030, presented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
The policy provides a comprehensive framework for the coordination, financing, implementation, monitoring and accountability of social protection programmes.
Council urged all states to align their own policies, laws, budgets and implementation plans with the national framework.
Key institutional proposals include the creation of a National Social Protection Council to be chaired by the Vice President.
The Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Labour and Employment, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction would serve as vice chairs.
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning would act as secretariat, while six governors representing the six geopolitical zones would be members.
The endorsement comes as the government intensifies efforts to move vulnerable households from temporary relief toward more sustainable empowerment, including through related initiatives unveiled around the same period.
Shettima’s Call for Tangible Results
Vice President Shettima used the meeting to emphasize that economic reforms must continue until they produce jobs, stronger purchasing power, greater business confidence, and improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
He stressed that government performance should be judged by follow-through rather than announcements and that macroeconomic indicators only matter if households actually feel the change.
Existing programmes, he added, should not be discarded simply because new priorities emerge. NEC’s role, he said, is to convert federal-state cooperation into measurable outcomes on the ground.

The dual focus on security training infrastructure and a strengthened social protection architecture reflects the administration’s attempt to address both immediate capacity gaps in policing and the longer-term challenge of cushioning citizens against economic hardship.
With the three-week rehabilitation timeline for the 13 police institutions, authorities appear intent on demonstrating speed of execution.
As states are now expected to harmonize their social protection systems with the new national policy, the coming months will test how effectively federal and state governments can turn the endorsed framework into coordinated action that reaches the most vulnerable households.
