UEFA Rule Blocks Arsenal Away Trip to Inter Milan in 2026-27 Champions League

As the 36 teams prepare for Thursday’s UEFA Champions League league-phase draw in Monaco, a relatively obscure but increasingly relevant rule has already shaped the possibilities for two of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Arsenal will not be drawn to face Inter Milan away from home in the 2026-27 campaign, while Liverpool cannot host Real Madrid at Anfield.

The restriction stems from a condition approved by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee: any individual fixture between the same two teams may not be repeated in the same competition with the same home team for three consecutive seasons.

In plain terms, if Team A has hosted Team B in the league phase in both 2024-25 and 2025-26, that same home arrangement is barred for 2026-27.

Why Arsenal Cannot Travel to the San Siro Again

Arsenal and Inter Milan met at the San Siro in the league phase in consecutive seasons. In November 2024 the Gunners lost 1-0 in Milan; they returned in January 2026 and won 3-1.

Those two successive visits trigger the three-season limit. The clubs can still be drawn against each other, but only with Arsenal as the home side at the Emirates Stadium.

A later knockout meeting remains unrestricted by this particular rule.

The same logic applies to Liverpool and Real Madrid. The Reds hosted Los Blancos at Anfield in both of the previous two league phases, winning 2-0 and then 1-0.

Consequently, Liverpool cannot stage a third consecutive home meeting with Madrid. An away fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu remains possible.

These are the only two fixtures currently affected by the three-season home-team restriction heading into the draw.

Broader Draw Rules Still Apply

Beyond the new home-team limitation, the familiar constraints remain firmly in place.

Clubs from the same association cannot meet in the league phase, so the English contingent — Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Manchester United — are shielded from one another.

No team may face more than two opponents from any single foreign association. Each club will be drawn against two sides from each of the four pots, playing one home and one away.

Arsenal sit in Pot 1 alongside Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

Their potential away opponents from that pot are therefore limited to PSG, Bayern, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atlético Madrid once the Inter restriction is factored in.

A Rule Born of the New Format

The single-table league phase, now entering its third season, made the three-year rule workable for the first time. UEFA designed it to reduce fixture fatigue and protect the competitive balance of the expanded competition.

While the clubs involved can still meet, the forced change of venue adds a fresh tactical and logistical dimension.

Thursday’s draw will reveal the full set of eight opponents for every side. For Arsenal supporters the prospect of another trip to Milan has been closed; for Liverpool fans the familiar sight of Real Madrid under the Anfield lights is off the table for another year. The rest of European football will learn its fate in Monaco.
