NFL Scraps Pro Bowl Game Entirely After Years of Flag Football Experiments

August 26, 2026 — The NFL is ending its Pro Bowl as a competitive event. League executives informed team owners on Wednesday that the long-struggling all-star showcase will no longer include a standalone game — tackle or flag — marking the first time a major U.S. professional sports league has fully abandoned its midseason or postseason all-star contest.

Instead, the Pro Bowl will become an individual performance honor. Exactly 88 players will be named Pro Bowlers each season, with no alternates selected.

The change aims to restore prestige to a designation that had grown diluted by widespread opt-outs, Super Bowl replacements, and waves of late substitutes.

From Hawaii Spectacle to Flag Games to Pure Honor

For decades the Pro Bowl was a January or February tackle game, long hosted in Hawaii before moving to various mainland sites. Player reluctance to risk injury ahead of free agency and the Super Bowl eroded its competitiveness.

In 2022 the league pivoted to “Pro Bowl Games,” a multi-day skills competition capped by an AFC-NFC flag football contest.

That format ran for four seasons, including a 2026 edition folded into Super Bowl week at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

Even the flag version failed to fully solve participation problems. “All-star games, I think, for all leagues have been fraught for a long time,” Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business, international and league events, told The Athletic.

“We made the switch four years ago from the ‘tackle’ Pro Bowl to the flag game… In many ways, we saw a decrease in the replacement players.

But ultimately, the Pro Bowl, at its core, is about honoring the best of the best in that season, on the field, in real games.”

What Comes Next

Selection voting stays unchanged: fans, players and coaches each control one-third of the ballot for the 88 spots across offense, defense and special teams.

Named Pro Bowlers will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles each February. The honor remains a significant résumé line for Hall of Fame consideration and contract incentives.

By eliminating alternates and the game itself, the league hopes to end the practice of players who never started the season as Pro Bowlers still claiming the title after late call-ups.

The move also removes the visual of replacement lineups that often bore little resemblance to the original ballots.

The decision closes a chapter that began in 1951. What began as a glamorous Hawaii showcase gradually lost its luster; the NFL has now chosen to keep the recognition while discarding the event that once defined it.
