Obidients Blame Tinubu for Hunger, Rally Support for Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket

Abuja, August 24, 2026 — The official Obidient Movement has launched a sharp critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, attributing widespread hunger across Nigeria to what it described as the President’s “greed and terrible policies,” while calling on citizens to back the Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, the group declared: “The severe hunger in the land is as a result of Tinubu’s greed and terrible policies. While he is asking us to fast, he is feasting nonstop with his family and friends.

We are not Tinubu’s slaves, and he cannot continue to steal our commonwealth, while innocent Nigerians starve to death.”

The post, accompanied by a graphic featuring images of hardship alongside photographs of Obi and Kwankwaso, highlighted a “144 days to go” countdown and urged supporters to “Vote Peter Obi and Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso to take your country back.” It carried the hashtags #PO4President, #OKTicket, #JoyIsComing and #TooBigToRig.

Growing Opposition Momentum

The message comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate, is paired with former Kano State governor and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate under what supporters call the “OK Ticket.”

Kwankwaso has publicly explained his decision to join forces with Obi, describing the alliance as one driven by national interest rather than regional or religious considerations.

He has emphasised shared goals of accountable governance, economic opportunity, and inclusiveness. Supporters argue the combination of Obi’s reform-oriented appeal and Kwankwaso’s northern grassroots base offers a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Obidient Movement has repeatedly assured followers that both men will appear on the 2027 ballot despite earlier legal hurdles surrounding the NDC’s registration status.

Hunger Crisis as Political Flashpoint

The statement taps into broader public frustration over the cost-of-living crisis.

Recent United Nations assessments have warned that tens of millions of Nigerians face acute food insecurity, a development opposition figures have linked to the removal of fuel subsidy, inflation, and other economic reforms introduced under the Tinubu administration.

While the government has rolled out interventions, including expanded food banks under the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative and insists progress is being made, critics maintain that ordinary citizens continue to struggle with high food prices and scarcity.

The Obidient post framed the coming election as an opportunity for Nigerians to reject the current trajectory, declaring that in 144 days citizens would have the chance to “throw him and his criminal gang out of Aso Rock.”

As campaign rhetoric sharpens on all sides, the focus on hunger and economic hardship is expected to remain a central theme in the battle for votes leading into 2027.
