“Spectacle of Shame” — Lawyer Slams Tinubu’s Background Ahead of 2027

Lagos / Abuja – August 22, 2026 — Prominent human rights lawyer and social commentator Inibehe Effiong has described President Bola Tinubu’s age, educational qualifications, family history, career record, and past background as a “spectacle of shame and embarrassment to Nigeria’s global image.”

Effiong made the remarks in a widely circulated post on X on Friday, reacting to fresh developments in a long-running US Freedom of Information Act case seeking the release of federal records relating to Tinubu from the early 1990s.

“This is so embarrassing for our country. Sadly, many see nothing wrong with this,” he wrote. “They keep talking about ‘my candidate’, the said candidate is a man whose age, educational qualifications, family history, career record and criminal background are a spectacle of shame.”

Context of the US Records Dispute

The comments come as the FBI has asked a federal court in Washington, D.C., for permission to submit confidential declarations under seal explaining why certain records should remain withheld.

The agency cited FOIA exemptions covering personal privacy, confidential sources, law-enforcement techniques, and information that could endanger an individual’s life or physical safety.

A US District Court judge subsequently granted the FBI permission for an in-camera (private) review of the sensitive material and set an August 28, 2026 deadline for the FBI, DEA, Department of Justice and Tinubu’s legal team to file their final oppositions to public release.

The records sought include an FBI file on Tinubu and interview reports from 1992 and 1993.

They relate to investigations that led to a 1993 US civil forfeiture proceeding in which approximately $460,000 held in an account in Tinubu’s name was forfeited.

Tinubu has consistently denied any involvement in drug trafficking. His lawyers maintain the matter was a civil action against funds and that he was never arrested, indicted or convicted of a drug-related offence in the United States.

Broader Questions Persist

Beyond the US court filings, questions about Tinubu’s precise age (publicly recorded as March 29, 1952) and details of his educational history—including studies at Richard J. Daley College and a degree from Chicago State University—have long featured in Nigerian political debate. Critics periodically raise these issues, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 presidential election cycle.

Effiong’s intervention has amplified online discussion, with supporters of the president dismissing the remarks as recycled opposition talking points, while critics argue the continued opacity around the US records harms Nigeria’s international standing.

As the August 28 court deadline approaches, all eyes remain on whether any additional documents will enter the public domain or remain sealed.

For now, the debate underscores the persistent tension between demands for full transparency and the legal protections surrounding decades-old investigative materials.
