ECOWAS Opens Landmark Abuja HQ as Tinubu Pledges Production Powerhouse

Abuja, Nigeria – July 2, 2026 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has seized the inauguration of the new Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) headquarters in Abuja to issue a bold call for deeper regional transformation, urging member states to move beyond consumption and trade toward genuine industrial production and shared prosperity.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at Thursday’s commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu described the impressive new complex — dubbed the “Eye of Africa” — as more than a building.

It stands as “a symbol of renewal, of resilience, and of confidence in the future of ECOWAS,” he said.

A Covenant Renewed for 450 Million West Africans

Speaking at the event, Tinubu highlighted ECOWAS’s five decades of achievements in peace-building, democratic governance, economic cooperation, and the free movement of people, goods, and services.

Yet he cautioned against complacency amid persistent threats: terrorism, violent extremism, food insecurity, climate change, public health crises, and the aspirations of a burgeoning youthful population.

“The hour has come to transform our regional market into a regional production base,” the President declared*. “Our integration must increasingly be driven by what we produce rather than by what we consume, for a Community that consumes what it does not make will forever live at the mercy of the goodwill of others.”*

He called for stronger focus on industrialization, regional value chains, intra-regional trade, innovation, manufacturing, and investment to drive the next phase of integration.

Security and Solidarity in Focus

Tinubu addressed the recent withdrawal of three member states, acknowledging that evolving security dynamics demand viewing integration through a broader lens encompassing collective security, political stability, and sustainable development.

He stressed that the door remains open for dialogue and reintegration, emphasizing unity and collective responsibility.

The President commended Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, for providing steady leadership during turbulent times.

He also thanked China for financing the project and congratulated the ECOWAS Commission under President Dr. Omar Touray for its successful delivery.

Voices of Partnership and Hope

President Bio described the new headquarters as an opportunity to renew a collective promise to the region’s 450 million citizens.

He praised Nigeria’s consistent support, calling the country “a great anchor” for the bloc.

Dr. Touray expressed gratitude to China, noting the complex will serve as a hub for enhanced coordination and the bloc’s expanding mandate.

China’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Yu Dunhai, highlighted the project as another milestone in Africa-China cooperation grounded in mutual trust and pragmatic partnership.

The state-of-the-art facility, financed and constructed with Chinese support, arrives at a critical juncture for West Africa.

As the region grapples with security challenges and economic vulnerabilities, the new headquarters is expected to strengthen institutional capacity and symbolize enduring commitment to unity.
