Kano, Nigeria - In a bold move signaling zero tolerance for interference with essential services, the Kano State Government has suspended the manager of the Thomas Regional Water Scheme following shocking discoveries of widespread vandalism and alleged sabotage at critical water infrastructure facilities.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, which has prioritized tackling the state’s long-standing water scarcity challenges, acted swiftly after an on-site inspection revealed extensive damage.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, detailed the troubling findings in a statement issued on Monday, June 22, 2026.

During visits to the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes — facilities intended to serve multiple local government areas — officials found generators and pumps stripped of nearly all electrical wiring.
