Abuja, Nigeria – June 15, 2026 — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the vice-presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives from all geopolitical zones.

Amaechi, who emerged as runner-up in the party’s presidential primaries, was selected for his extensive experience and broad national appeal.

A Ticket of Experience and Strategy The statement described the Atiku-Amaechi pairing as more than a political alliance. It highlighted Amaechi’s distinguished public service record, including his time as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation under the Buhari administration, where he oversaw major rail and transportation projects.

The ADC emphasised that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and broader Southern Nigeria, combined with his reputation as a reform-minded administrator and coalition builder, would complement Atiku Abubakar’s national stature and experience.

Together, the pair is presented as a truly national ticket capable of bridging regional, generational, and political divides while offering Nigerians a credible alternative focused on security, economic revival, job creation, and national unity.

Political Context and Calculations The announcement comes weeks after the ADC presidential primaries, in which Atiku Abubakar secured the party’s ticket with a comfortable margin. Amaechi had contested the primaries but finished second.

Party sources say the choice of Amaechi was strategic, aimed at strengthening the ticket’s appeal in the South and consolidating support within the emerging opposition coalition.

The move has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a strong, experienced pairing capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Critics, however, have pointed to past political tensions, including Amaechi’s earlier public comments questioning Atiku’s electability, and questioned the timing and motives behind the alliance.

Implications for 2027 The Atiku-Amaechi ticket is seen as part of broader efforts by opposition figures to build a formidable platform ahead of the January 2027 general election.

By combining Atiku’s national network and political experience with Amaechi’s governance record and regional influence, the ADC hopes to present a united and credible alternative.

The party has called on all members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, and Nigerians of goodwill to support the ticket in what it described as a “historic journey to renew our nation.”

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Rotimi Amaechi has issued personal statements on the development as of the time of filing this report. Further details on the campaign structure and policy direction are expected in the coming days.
