Tinubu Mourns General Killed by Bandits in Captivity
Abuja, June 13, 2026— President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while in the custody of armed bandits in Katsina State.
In an official statement from the Presidency, Tinubu condoled with the bereaved family, describing the incident as a tragic loss. The President also extended sympathies to the Katsina State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and prominent military spokesman between 2015 and 2017, was abducted alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, on May 30, 2026, while traveling in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State en route to a wedding.
Their driver escaped with gunshot wounds.
The retired officer died in captivity from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension, despite rescue efforts by security agencies. His wife reportedly remains in the hands of the captors.
Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, confirmed the death, calling it a painful loss.
In his reaction, President Tinubu reiterated the government’s firm stance against terrorism and banditry.
He referenced his Democracy Day address on June 12, warning bandits, kidnappers, and their sponsors to surrender or face the full force of the state.
He stressed that the government will not negotiate with terrorists and urged national unity in the fight against insecurity.
“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents,” the President stated, emphasizing that such enemies of the nation must not be spared.
Major-General Abubakar served the nation with distinction in various strategic roles, contributing significantly to counter-insurgency efforts. The Defence Headquarters described him as a patriotic soldier whose legacy endures in the Armed Forces.
This incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s northwest, where banditry continues to claim lives despite ongoing military operations.
It has sparked widespread grief and renewed calls for intensified efforts to curb kidnapping and restore peace in the region.
The Presidency noted that the government remains committed to triumphing over terror and building a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.
