Hoodlums Raid Ebonyi College Hostel, Nine Students Injured

Ngbo, Ebonyi State – June 10, 2026 — In the dead of night, fear gripped the female hostel at Ebonyi College of Health Science and Technology in Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area. Around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, suspected hoodlums stormed the one-storey building, turning a place of rest into a scene of panic and desperation.

The attackers, described as armed robbers, demanded valuables from the students. They made away with phones, cash, ATM cards and other personal items.

In the chaos that followed, nine young women sustained injuries — not from direct assault by the intruders, but from jumping out of windows in a frantic bid to escape or hide their belongings.

Provost Princess Chetachi Usulor confirmed that the injured students, some of whom fell from upper floors, are currently receiving medical attention.

Doctors are conducting X-rays and scans to rule out complications involving their spinal cords or waists.

“Some of the students living upstairs jumped through the windows out of fear or while trying to hide their phones,” the Provost stated.

“Those currently receiving treatment sustained injuries from the fall. About nine students are receiving medical attention. We want to be sure there are no complications involving their spinal cords or waists before they are discharged.”

Provost Raises Alarm and Mobilises Response

Provost Usulor said she immediately alerted security agencies when the attack began.

“I called the police control room, the divisional police headquarters and homeland security personnel. As people started arriving at the scene, the hoodlums fled,” she recounted.

She confirmed that no student is missing and all have been accounted for, dismissing circulating rumours of disappearances.

However, she expressed concern over possible insider involvement, noting that a female was reportedly among the attackers.

The woman allegedly guided the hoodlums to specific rooms and demanded the whereabouts of a particular individual.

“That is one of the issues the police are investigating,” the Provost said. “It is their responsibility to determine whether anyone was involved in aiding the attackers.”

Security Gaps Exposed

The attack has highlighted longstanding security challenges at the institution. The college sits on a large expanse of largely unfenced land, creating multiple access points that the attackers exploited.

While the state government had released funds for perimeter fencing, the Provost noted that more resources are still needed to complete the project.

At the time of the incident, male security personnel were stationed outside the female hostel due to the unavailability of female officers. The on-duty security staff are now being questioned by the police as part of the ongoing investigation.

Enhanced Security Measures Promised

Following the attack, college management met with security stakeholders in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

They have agreed on stronger measures, including round-the-clock security coverage by police officers, local vigilantes and homeland security personnel.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Ernest Chukwudi Nwobasi, also confirmed the incident, describing it as an armed robbery.

He appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to strengthen security on campus, complete the perimeter fencing, and support the institution’s accreditation needs.

For the young women who leapt from windows in the darkness, the night will remain a terrifying memory. While they escaped with their lives, the physical and emotional scars may linger.

The swift response by the Provost and security agencies prevented a worse outcome, but the incident has once again exposed the vulnerability of students in many Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Authorities have vowed not to let the matter rest until those responsible are brought to justice and adequate measures are put in place to protect the campus community.
