Makinde Formally Endorses Adekanmbi as Preferred Successor for Oyo 2027 Governorship

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has publicly declared Hon. Abimbola “Bimbo” Adekanmbi, the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.

The endorsement came during APM’s primary process, where Makinde framed Adekanmbi’s candidacy as “Omituntun 3.0” — a direct continuation of his administration’s development agenda (Omituntun 1.0 and 2.0).

“Did you enjoy Omituntun 1.0 and are you enjoying Omituntun 2.0? Bimbo Adekanmbi is Omituntun 3.0.”Addressing potential political baggage: “I have told Bimbo Adekanmbi… not to inherit my enemies. He should chart his own path… He should continue things we did well and improve on my flaws.”On party affiliation: “We are blind to party colouration; what matters is competence… provided the candidate is an indigene of the state.”

Adekanmbi, a former Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi (APC administration), thanked Makinde and party leaders. He pledged an inclusive campaign focused on economic empowerment, education, and grassroots development, describing his nomination certificate as belonging to “every APM member and every Oyo citizen who wants a government that works for the people.”

Speculation about Makinde’s preference for Adekanmbi had circulated for weeks. It intensified around May 14, 2026, when the governor signaled interest in the 2027 presidential race, prompting discussions about succession planning.

Earlier reports in early May faced pushback, with a presidential aide initially denying a formal endorsement while consultations continued. The public declaration at the APM event has now clarified the position.

The move has sparked mixed reactions as supporters view it as strategic continuity and competence-based leadership. Critics within PDP circles have expressed dissatisfaction, citing Adekanmbi’s relatively recent alignment and perceived unpopularity in some quarters. Some stakeholders reportedly backed alternative candidates like Dr. Debo Akande during internal discussions.

Political observers note Oyo State could head into a three-horse race in 2027 involving major parties and cross-party alliances.
